I’m in the same boat and have recently taken to giving people plants in fun pots. Go to a scrap yard or thrift store and find some weird shit than can hold at least a cup of dirt and has a hole in the bottom (or can have one drilled in it). You can then just go find any hearty native plants (or weeds) and dig them up with their roots intact and just plop them in there. Very simple and cheap and the results are often pretty cool
This is so sweet of you, and I'm sure your SO is gonna love this! I second the comments so far, but another thing you can do that isn't expensive is make origami. I love making origami for my friends or past partners that is tailored to them in some way so it's very personal and meaningful. One of my favorites is making fortune tellers with details specific to our friendship/relationship or things they like
I just did this one with some moss that I thought looked cool. But this is my current hyper fixation and there’s definitely other things. Cards are great, custom stickers, a personalized playlist, seasoning mix for their favorite dish, coupon for a fun experience / date that you planned…etc
Wait this is so cool!! Do you have any recommendations on how to make this work in a dorm room? He’s also in college so I wouldn’t wanna accidentally kill the plant if it didn’t have enough room for its roots. He’s been wanting to garden and while it’s no rode bush I think it would be cute :)
Yeah they’re not fancy plants at all, mine are almost all weeds lmao. But that’s why I like them, they’re native and hard to kill and brighten up a room all the same. I’d honestly just go look for a hearty patch of weeds/native flowers that’s already living in partial shade. If your container is at least as big as a standard cup or so you can just excavate the plant, ground cover, and root system (with dirt) all in one go. The plant will hardly notice the difference when it gets moved inside.
Just make sure there are some holes in the bottom. Also sprinkle some small rocks underneath your dirt/root ball, this will help water find its way out to prevent root rot. Just do that and water it occasionally or when you see the leaves start to droop! And if the plant dies then just go grab another type and see if it likes it better!
