y don't last names follow the matriarchal line? you would think the name of the child would be given to the person giving birth, since its easier to verify the birthing parent, is actually the childs biological parent. especially b4 dnas test like

Easiest answer is to look at history and that will explain it to you.

For most of history that would defeat the purpose of a last name, since people introduced themselves as “X, son of Y” bc parent Y is the one whose status determines yours. Also, I think fidelity on was the norm for women until very recently so the whole “well the dad could be anyone” problem is more a modern one and would utterly dumbfound people throughout most of history. Reinventing the whole system to accommodate for women’s’ infidelity would be really embarrassing to whoever suggested it.

i'm assuming the answer is probably sexism then. it's just really interesting to me since infidelity has been around for ages and how it used to be scandalous to get pregnant out of wedlock. i wonder how many people lived and died having the name of a man that wasn't their father.

Or maybe, what Im telling you is to research the reason why in history. What we consider sexism today was more than likely not considered sexism in that age of history.

what? why would that not still be sexism tho?thats like saying "Oh slavery might be considered bad today but it was normal in that age of history" like it's still bad lol. Just bc something was normalized or socially acceptable doesn't mean it's was right

lots of men consider the draft to be sexist even though it hasn't happened in over 50 years and was more than likey not considered sexist at the time. that doesn't change the fact tho that it was sexist then and still sexist now.
