Whenever I’ve done this it was because I was in the middle of something, had a spare second to reply, then got back to doing whatever it was because I don’t expect people to respond right away. I’d rather talk on the phone if we’re doing a real time conversation

I don’t understand why other guys do that, I try and give a valid excuse. But a big part of why I wouldn’t always respond right away is fear of sounding “too desperate”. I used to gauge it like “if you took 20 minutes to respond to me I’ll take 15-20 to respond back
