Well ACOTAR isn’t a great example anyway. Plus reading usually takes the time and effort along with self imagination. There’s plenty of sectors to what “smart” looks like. You get to take in what the author wants to portray along with the themes and analyzing moments compared to a script just telling you how it is after the showed airs or in previews. But the say the same with “street smart”. Don’t let it get to you

well that’s bc acotar isn’t THAT great once u start questioning how the author tries to position the characters vs their actual actions. “smart” can be defined as understanding themes within the story, interpreting how the writing reflects a perspective of the character or author, etc etc. it’s not abt consuming content

Reading requires active effort. Watching can be extremely passive. Most movies and shows are made for "second screen" watchers, who literally can't pay attention to one screen at a time. Even the worst bookslop has to be made for an audience that self-selects for paying attention to words. The laziest, average and most attentive reader will always be more focused and observant than the laziest, average and most attentive movie watcher respectively.

have you seen some of the books people read? imo it’s not just reading that makes me think someone’s smart, but when they engage with texts critically. this can also go for films and television. that said, reading is harder to passively consume compared to tv/films

I had an obsession with reading from like second grade to eighth grade, think like three books a day minimum while I was still in school and playing three sports. Trust me, you see that pay off down the line. It let me do my high school English program in two years through a college, did a year of college for free through my high school, graduated college in three, and I’m about to start my masters. literally anyone can watch a movie, screens are bad for ur brain while reading is good, a lot fewer people can read and understand and have discussions about good literature than about movies
