You hardly know each other at this point. Sometimes silence is best instead of awkward small talk before the date. Because the date is where you’ll actually get to know each other/ get to the details and see if this is even worth pursuing. If after the date he still distant then I’d say drop him because he doesn’t respect your time and is not invested
