politics have become polarized with the separate parties, leading to the values of each being drastically different atp. so yeah honestly if someone's still voting republican i dont wanna be in touch. individual policy opinions r different, but the core values of the left r non-negotiable for me
Yes, the two parties are very different, but there is also a lot of difference within those parties. Look at the Islamiphobic mailers Andrew Cuomo’s superpac sent out against Zohran Mamdani in the New York mayoral election, for example. Someone who votes Cuomo and someone who voted Mamdani obviously are both voting Democrat, but they have pretty drastically different politics from each other Does what you’re saying apply to those kinds of political differences?
I really think you’re overthinking things. People with bigoted beliefs, think their religion should create our laws, voted for Trump, subscribe to white supremacy, etc. are not people that most people want to befriend when someone says they don’t wanna be around people who disagree with them politically. Republican 15 years ago is a whole lot different than what they are now. When someone says republican 9/10 they’re talking about the crazy racist ones holding office now.
i consider the big stuff the things that are consistently talked about in the context of our large political divide as a country. abortion, immigration, aspects of foreign policy, etc. we may disagree on things like the level of taxation for top earners or about how to approach increasing affordable access to healthcare. i don’t mind being friends with people who don’t agree with me exactly on everything, but i do mind if our overall values differ by a lot.
