i don't surround myself with people who would disagree with me politically (not based on that purely, more because their values r fundamentally different)

My friends basically all have different views than me and it’s super frustrating

With the current state of politics that is not an option generally speaking, obviously we dont have identical opinions on all points but we agree where it matters

Very different in some areas, although in practice in the current political climate we often end up voting pretty similarly

How is it not an option? There are a variety of different political positions people can have without agreeing with or voting for MAGA, politics isn’t a binary thing

That’d disagree with you politically on anything? Like, even what candidate you like more in a primary election?

This is why I said generally speaking, and quite frankly if youre third party youre still apart of the problem based on how the system functions

There’s a lot more to politics than what political party you vote for. I am pretty confident I have very different politics than you, but by the sounds of it we both consistently vote Democrat

Which is why I included the end that we dont have identical opinions on everything but agree where it matters... im confused at your disagreement with me lol

not necessarily, but if someone supports trump (for example) i will not associate with them.

So is it about people disagreeing with you politically or specifically about supporting Trump/Republicans?

politics have become polarized with the separate parties, leading to the values of each being drastically different atp. so yeah honestly if someone's still voting republican i dont wanna be in touch. individual policy opinions r different, but the core values of the left r non-negotiable for me

Yes, the two parties are very different, but there is also a lot of difference within those parties. Look at the Islamiphobic mailers Andrew Cuomo’s superpac sent out against Zohran Mamdani in the New York mayoral election, for example. Someone who votes Cuomo and someone who voted Mamdani obviously are both voting Democrat, but they have pretty drastically different politics from each other Does what you’re saying apply to those kinds of political differences?

What do you consider to be the big stuff vs what’s minor?

I really think you’re overthinking things. People with bigoted beliefs, think their religion should create our laws, voted for Trump, subscribe to white supremacy, etc. are not people that most people want to befriend when someone says they don’t wanna be around people who disagree with them politically. Republican 15 years ago is a whole lot different than what they are now. When someone says republican 9/10 they’re talking about the crazy racist ones holding office now.

I totally understand how the little political nuances may be subjective in terms of agreement, but i was talking more abt generalized policies that define the two parties.

i consider the big stuff the things that are consistently talked about in the context of our large political divide as a country. abortion, immigration, aspects of foreign policy, etc. we may disagree on things like the level of taxation for top earners or about how to approach increasing affordable access to healthcare. i don’t mind being friends with people who don’t agree with me exactly on everything, but i do mind if our overall values differ by a lot.
