What’s the overall opinion on being called ma’am? Like yes ma’am, no ma’am?

If that’s the way u normally talk then it can be charming like I feel like some southern guys just naturally do that but I wouldn’t force it

Gross to me it just makes me feel uncomfortable. It gives basement dweller. Almost Every time I have a weird guy in my DMs they always use ma’am

Appreciate you being receptive to questions! I’ll have to keep that in mind next time I visit the northwest!

I have exactly one person in my life who I will let call me ma’am, at even at that the yes, no attached to it always feels condescending. It also definitely feels different depending on the age of the person, but generally don’t like it, and tends to make me think less of the person who said it

Eh, I personally don’t like it when people say it bc it makes me feel old but if they got a southern accent I’m chill with it bc that’s just the South

That’s just how I was raised so I was just curious. I had always said it but now I’m in cali so I’m not sure if it’s disrespectful here?

Idk anywhere it would be considered disrespectful, but I also live in kentucky lmao

Not the point just trying to be respectful. Just wondering if it’s seen as disrespectful in other parts of the country

Yea I’ve been to Kentucky and the vibes were the same when I said it there

I usually do a mix of both. Like Miss “insert name here” when calling their name but “yes ma’am” or “ no ma’am” when responding to them

I’m from the East, we don’t hear a lot of people talking like that besides as a term of respect for older people. I’ve been called that once or twice but it’s very strange.

Like randomly or while you were working?

Randomly. I was shopping for food and someone said “excuse me ma’am” and I freaked out. It doesn’t help I look extremely young.

Would “excuse me miss?” be better in that situation?

Anonymous replying to -> OP 16w

I’m honestly not sure. I’ve hardly ever heard anyone refer to anyone as ma’am. I don’t even really do it towards those who are older. Miss would be much better for me personally, yes.

So wait, do yall use any terms of respect like “ma’am” or “miss” where you’re from?

Anonymous replying to -> OP 16w

Uhhh that’s a great question. In the specific area I live in? Not really. Everyone is very nice and opens the doors for one another, and gives smiles and such but most terms of respect are used by service workers.

Ok so there’s respect being shown just not through those terms. I really just don’t want to seem weird by using those terms in other regions 😭

I don’t think you’ll be necessary seen as weird- especially if you have a southern accent lol. It’s more of a culture difference than anything else.

Oh the accent is a whole different animal I’d be afraid that people wouldn’t understand what I’m saying. I really appreciate the responses strawberry!

Yea if no accent it sounds kinda incel. That’s good to hear though! A lot easier to fix speech my speech habits than my accent itself but if I don’t have to fix either even better!
