let’s say a girl is 16 but she pretends to be 19 to an older guy and the guy goes to jail? Who is more in the wrong the girl for lying, or the guy for not being able to tell the age?

The girl is obviously wrong for lying but at the end of the day the guy should check in some way of age and there are clues that should come up pretty quickly to make that realization hit. Why would a 19 year old be in high school all day and not be graduating for another few years? Are parents/friends in the picture? Even if they have a fake I truly think theres major differences in ages and maturity that should be picked up on

Well she’s very wrong for that but they still should have asked or clarified before ever pursuing them. Along with noticing signs about them that give it away like schooling, their afternoon activity things like that

Even as a woman I can’t always tell the difference between the different ages in teen hood. I’ve seen 16 yr olds who look 19 and vice versa. the guy probably should check to verify her age just for his own safety exactly bc this shit happens. But morally it is ENTIRELY the girls fault. She is old enough to know better

Depending on the guy’s age, he probably should not even be looking at 19 yr old women in the first place. If he’s 45 or older, he’s most likely a predator or abuser even if he waits for girls to come of legal age. If he’s under 30, it’s a reasonable mistake. It’s not uncommon for ppl to actually want an age gap.

If he’s in his early 20s or younger, Romeo and Juliet laws may protect him anyway.

For legal purposes, clear proof of guilt is needed. If there is written record of her lying about her age, that should be enough to exonerate him or at least greatly reduce his sentence. Especially if he is neurodivergent or otherwise less socially fluent.

But still, I am all in favor of checking people’s ID and doing other basic background checks before hooking up.
