honestly i have no idea what counts as a good cologne (especially since what smells great to one person is a migraine trigger to another) but the best advice i got is that you should not be wearing a lot of any smell you don't need to spray a lot of times for most types i like the "spray-delay-walk away" method since it better disperses the scent most importantly, make sure it's a smell you like since you like nature maybe look at some sandalwood scented stuff?

I love alkemia scents for women and they have some great men’s ones, imo they do sample sets if you want to try out a few otherwise try out a scentbird subscription. Find *your* scent I love woodsy personally for men and women, but scent on one skin will be entirely different than on another.

Lowkey I LOVE deep date night cologne scents. Anytime I smell it if i pass by a man the scent of it genuinely makes my heart skip a beat😭

my best advice is to get a sampling kit. usually way cheaper than a full bottle and will allow you to experiment and layer certain scents. different scent combinations may smell great when sprayed or on sample paper, but are subject to change on your skin as your body chemistry interacts with them. for me i can’t wear sweet or overly musky scents bc things dry sweet on me and turns into a weird smelling sugar bomb

Oh and be gentle with scents. If using spray, 2-4 sprays. Spray and walk through. For oils, put on pulse points. Make someone get close to you to smell you. Every time I go to the mall some grown ass man (who does not have the excuse of being a teen boy figuring out shit) walks by drenched in enough scent that I can taste it from 10 ft away.

Also rubbing scents changes them and can make them fade faster. If putting directly on skin, put it on your wrists and tap your wrists to neck. That’s another way to not have someone drown in your cologne.

also worth knowing the base of the scent ie is it alcohol or oil based (if it’s cheaper it’s likely alcohol based) as that’ll effect how it dries on you and how long the scent lasts. also don’t shy away from unisex or even scents marketed towards women. lots of higher end brands kinda just ditch the gendered marketing. for men there’s typically an aversion to sweet or floral scents (though i don’t think the presence of the latter is worth discounting the scent as a whole)

scent descriptions are often organized into “notes”. top notes are the initial smell that tends to fade rather quickly (why you need to let it dry down). middle notes are the ones that give the scent its character, and base notes are the longest lasting ones, so the core of the scent. so if something has a top note that you think might not work (like floral), it’ll generally fade quickly.
