it’s a joke about how calling yourself a “moderate” or “middle of the road” in america usually just means someone who knows progressive causes are generally good but consistently compromises with right wing beliefs because they don’t taken a principled stance on things. and the joke is that political polarization is so bad even the moderates have to stand for something
