What can someone do to make you feel more comfortable while hiking with them if you’ve never been alone with them like that before?

Honestly? There’s nothing you can do to make me feel comfortable going with you if I haven’t been alone with you before or for long. I totally get the intention behind it! But I’ve heard way too many horror stories. If you absolutely have to go to a short trail where there’s loads of people. We are thinking about our safety.

I was in a troublesome dilemma like this before. I love hiking and this guy friend (who I didn’t know well and was probably trying to be more than friends) wanted to go hiking with me, everything seemed ok but then out of the blue he extended our plans, without telling me, into a 5 day camping trip (mind you we hung out in person only 5 times before this) and then started cursing at me when I didn’t immediately respond to his messages (my mom was in the hospital). Obviously I didn’t go.

For context I enjoy going hiking to places like overlooks, enjoying pretty flowers along the way, encountering wildlife, watching sunrises and sunsets, etc, and I think it’s nice to do this with a friend or partner just to have someone to share the moments with (ofc there’s also merit and peace in doing it alone). I know that this can make some people uneasy though since it’s kinda scary to just go out into the woods or wherever with someone you’ve never done that with before or don’t know well

If they’re nervous about the terrain, talk about it and reassure them that it’s safe and you’ve been here before and that it’s well trodden, etc. they’ll get more comfortable with experience. If they’re nervous about being alone with you, be very casual and considerate. Walk in from of them so they can always see you. Make sure they know the general route so they could navigate out themselves. Don’t come armed

Of course hiking trips can be absolutely delightful, some of my best memories are hiking with my friends and the people I love! but it can be a precarious position if it’s too ambitious and too early on when getting to know someone. As far as ensuring comfort it’s probably best to take baby steps, with smaller, more populated, trails early on, with larger trips later on after knowing them longer.
