Genuine question for women here. Do you believe the effects that smut novels have on readers is comparable to the effects of watching porn. If you think the effects are significantly different, explain how exactly you think it to be different.

I mean in my head it’s like reading a graphic description of violence in a book is gonna have a different effect on a person than watching a video of someone being killed or something

Part of why porn is so bad is it changes your view of what is realistic. We’ve seen studies about this. To my knowledge we don’t have any real research on specifically reading smut. I would much prefer my partner read novels than watch porn as well, since we know the negative effects.

What i am specifically talking about reguarding the effects is those which persist, i.e. the effects on how we view the opposite sex or relationships, how it effects one's mental faculties, and how it actively affects relationships or finding relationships semi-directly

In my opinion, doesn’t really have in fact really honestly at least on me I don’t really read smart because like I don’t know it’s just so cringe and not really a storyline but I do like romance novels, though those are ok because like it builds up the relationship

Realistic/exaggerated or not, porn and smut both elicit a disordered desire, which is dehumanizing and objectifying. Neither, especially at the rate they are being consumed, particularly by young individuals, is conducive to a healthy, functioning individual, and consequently, society.

The poll currently stands saying that smut is better than porn. For those making the argument that smut is the better, or more tolerable of the two evils, while I believe that the distinction I’m about to make is ultimately negligible, (I don’t believe the justification stands in the end) I still think it’s worth trying to articulate the sentiment.

Simply put and in short, where smut is text-based, and therefore necessarily creates a buffer or gap that your imagination has to fill, porn, on the other hand, is an unmediated, instantaneous exposure and consumption of graphic visualization. Is this an accurate representation of the poll or did I miss something?

comparable, but watching porn is definitely much worse

I think it's harmful but not in the same way a porn addiction is. I have a lot to say about this topic so bare with me. It's a lot harder to slip into a smut addiction then a porn addiction, bc along the lines of what strawberry said it's tends to be way less realistic. I also want to add lots of women read queer smut. A03 (fanfiction website) most popular ships are usually all MLM couples. I think this casues women to fetishize MLM couples, similar to how men who watch lesbian porn fetishize

it doesn't have smut, and that's frankly not an normal approach to literature. while i do think that porn is different bc it's strictly bad acting into just full blown sex scenes, at least published smut novels have *somewhat* of a plot points but it doesn't always lead to a masturbation or sex addiction. and i also wouldn't say it really affects the sexual expectations of women, unless they do have a really bad problem.

I mean I don’t consume either so it’s hard to kinda answer from a personal perspective, but I will say I’ve met people before who are p*rn addicts before, never met anyone who was a “smut addict”

I know, that's why i never mentioned men or women in the post. However, women are the predominant consumers of smut which is why i put it here.

That's why i ask, currently there is a massive gap in research into the effects of these adult novels and i can't imagine them to be too good. I don't know if this is what you were implying but i don't think generating unrealistic expectations is exclusive to porn if the excerpts from some current best selling romance novels are anything to go off of.

Well that’s true but the reasons for reading books like that is very different. My best friend does read a lot of smut books. Because they are funny. A guy with an 13” dick and who can bench press 500 pounds? A lot of smut books are about vampires and werewolves and mythical creatures. I don’t think most people mistake written smut with reality, which is part of why I find it less harmful.

But not all smut is obviously unrealistic, specifically in the way they portray relationship dynamics, that is what i would worry about.

It’s not all unrealistic it’s true. But I’m giving reasons as to why I personally see it as less harmful. I also read smut myself, and I did at one point watch porn. I feel much different after reading smut verse how I felt when I was watched porn. Overall you hear a lot less about addictions, and until we have proper research I have noticed it being less harmful for myself so

Honestly fair, I do however think that the fact that smut takes much more time to consume and tends to be much longer lends itself even more towards the development of unhealthy escapist habits.

I mean it depends. Very much think smut can be unhealthy. But some people watch porn a lottt just like how some people become addicted to gore or even snuff content, which used to be an easy bigger thing and easy to find. And I wouldn’t compare that to someone who spends too much time listening to true crime or reading graphic horror. Idk.

I used to work with someone who got fired bc they couldn’t go without watching it for a single shift at work even and that’s a common thing with porn addictions

Your mention of gore addiction reminded me of the recent stuff reguarding d4vd, to spare those unfamiliar i would suggest staying clear of any information about it as your life can only be made worse by knowing, i promise

Yeah I know too much about this stuff (not from myself going through it but ppl around me a weird amount) and it is very much possible. I was a server and half the kitchen staff was like that istg. I’d ask them to do something and they’d put their phone down and it was some naked woman.

WLW couples or women who like other women in general. I also believe you can't really discuss smut without discussing fanfiction. Since fanfiction is kinda where most women are introduced to smut. It really bothers me as someone who both reads and has written fanfiction that if you choose to post it, it's available for anyone to read. So that means minors are actively engaging with pure smut. I feel like this can become addictive, like some of my friends will refuse to read anything if 2/3

I also think unlike men, if a women does have a smut addiction it wouldn't affect her performance in the bedroom. Ik lots of men experience ED if they have a porn addiction. However all to say, with all things, i think smut and porn when engaged with in moderation is fine. I enjoy reading & writing both smutty and non smutty fanfiction of my favorite ships. My boyfriend and i sometimes even read smut together or watch porn to get us in the mood. However, I read plenty of books without any smut
