In individual situations, you can address it, but the whole point is that the male gaze exists on a societal level. Movies, TV shows, advertisements, paintings – almost all of it is made with the male gaze in mind. It's not something we can just "escape" by wearing a baggy sweatshirt or something, unfortunately.
The “male gaze” is like the bogey man, it can mean different things to different people. But at the end of the day just ask- is what I’m doing respectful to the woman, would I do the same thing to them if they were a man (and I was also straight and cis)? Consistency in treatment is what I usually strive for.
