honestly it makes no difference to me if it was said either way. but if you want to be extra meticulous, “may I be your boyfriend” sounds nicer because 1) “may” is a more polite version of “can”, 2) it gives the vibe of considering that she is her own separate person (which she is but still) Idk it’s hard for me to put the second point into words, but whatever, good luck
