Some people really want their partners to ask their parents permission before proposing and although it originated from sexist practices, it is much more about getting parent’s input on their partner for those who care about their parents’ opinions. It just depends on what the couple decides they want to do and respecting their partner’s wishes.

I don’t have a good relationship with my parents and don’t seek their opinion or approval for my choices or partner. It feels like undermining my ability to make my own decisions to make their approval so important that they would be asked before even proposing to me.
