(2) and he makes terrible comments to her even when my gf and i are around. he won’t get a job, kate pays for everything. and i understand that some women are willing to be with a man like this. the part i don’t understand is that she knows how terrible he is. like when she and my girlfriend are hanging out she will openly talk about how much he sucks. so why does she not leave him? for context, there’s nothing forcing her to stay. he’s not on the lease, he doesn’t pay anything, no kids

There could be a lot of reasons that make her want or more likely to stay. Family history, poor self esteem, long term being together- everyone is different. I agree, he sounds like a loser but you can’t force anyone to act in anyway.

You don't know that last part, necessarily. I doubt she'd just casually mention to you if he, for example, hurts her if she tries to leave him, or says that he'll kill himself if she does.
