Just spent over an hour explaining to my friend’s IEP team that when she goes nonverbal, taking it personally and doubling down is stupid. I still don’t think they got it.

hey! just so you know, nonverbal isn’t a temporary state, and nonverbal people and their carers have asked the broader autistic community to stop using it this way. the term to use instead is “verbal shutdown” /nm /lh

i use the term selectively mute to describe it when that happens to me, but i’ve found a lot of the time people don’t understand that the selective part isn’t actually selective

That’s interesting. Do you have any links where I could learn more about this? I’m really curious about the logic behind this since it’s a spectrum and obviously many people’s experiences change from day to day.
