i try to remember that how people talk about others is just a reflection of how critical they are of themself. it’s just projecting insecurity most of the time. if the criticism is valid enough to make me feel bad i just remember that things/art that are liked by every person tend to be soulless and crappy. the most interesting art is polarizing or not everyone’s cup of tea. calling someone’s artwork creepy if that wasn’t the clear intention of the work isnt helpful and is pretty bad critique.
I cut off the feeling. Everyone has their own opinions and I’m not going to care about someone’s opinions if I don’t care about the person, even if I do care about them though I still remind myself other’s opinions are valid. Apparently most people don’t find it that easy to cut off feelings so I don’t know that it will work for you though. It’s a ✨trauma power✨. Plus, creepy isn’t an insult to me. I am kinda creepy. Eventually I’ll find someone who thinks that’s awesome.
I’m an artist with a lot of experience including professional and one way I’d recommend solving your problem is by mentally looking at the art you draw for class/jobs as “work art” that does not belong to you and is just a product. That way when it’s criticized, it doesn’t feel like a piece of your heart is being criticized. Save the beautiful works of art for yourself, close friends, portfolios, etc.
i try to sit with the discomfort until it goes away or i think deeper about why it’s effecting me so much. maybe it’s because i want connection and criticism feels like the opposite of that. maybe it’s because im already insecure but i have no reason to be bc im doing my best and i try to be a good and kind person. for me how i handle it very much depends on the criticism
