I’m in med school and I keep being told the way I talk is robotic and “unnerving” or “off putting”, I’m already making a great effort to have some inflection in my voice but it sounds so fake when I do. Does anyone have advice?

It’s to the point where people tell me I’d do great working in a morgue. I wouldn’t care if it wasn’t in this context, but obviously I care about my patients greatly and want them to feel comfortable with me.

Im sorry I don’t have any good advice and I don’t know how much this will help, but I’d feel a lot more comfortable with a doctor like you, than all the ones who put on a fake face and act overly pleasant. I feel a lot safer with someone who sounds more “robotic” but cares in a real genuine way

It might actually help to try less hard. A lot of people have robotic voices and are charismatic, but trying too hard to make it sound different can make it uncanny valley. If people think it’s unnerving they can deal, and if it’s an issue of bedside manner then it’s probably easier to focus on what you say than how you say it

Idk i would actually want a doctor who sounds professional even if they sound a bit robotic. Even if your speech isn’t as “fun” or “interesting” as other people’s, at least you sound like you know what you’re doing

Motivational interviewing. You don’t even need to be a therapist to use it. It’s a lot more than this, but it essentially boils down to you repeating what the patient says in your own words, then saying “that must feel very XYZ” or something to that affect

Idk if this is what you are trying, but in high school i used to pitch my voice up a lot and it made it naturally vary more?

That could just be me, but I do think others feel the same

So I scared people less? When I spoke with a higher pitch people interpreted it as nice/polite instead of intense/cold. I stopped because it felt too weird, but it did help in high school

Does it make your life any better to be rude to other people? I genuinely feel really sorry for those who think they need to be cruel to others. No one’s laughing babes.
