i had fun with it as a whole — the dressing up, experiencing it with girls and moms and grandmas in the theater, the double feature with oppenheimer…. but after all that died down i can agree :/ if they were going to go with a serious movie about feminism they could have done way better
I’m sorry, but WHAT?!?!!! The whole point of the movie was that it wasn’t just another ditsy Barbie movie. It’s about capitalism and patriarchy and the failures and beauty of the Barbie dream. It’s for the adults who grew up with Barbie and the unrealistic body expectations imposed on us. It was about finding our way back to dreaming. If you want a “fun girlboss fantasy” movie, there are plenty of those already
i watch movies for entertainment, inspiration, stimulation, and to escape shitty reality. i don’t watch barbie movies for education on social justice issues, even though i’m extremely passionate about them. i personally wish they would’ve kept it lighthearted and fashion-centered and stayed in barbie land. the concept of “weird barbie” ended up being wildly ableist 😬
that’s understandable and valid! personally i go through phases. i think real life is too harsh so im usually looking for escapism but sometimes i enjoy something educational with something to say. i would have been happy with it being more lighthearted as well if thats what it stuck to.
