They’re feeling uncomfortable because if they laugh they’d feel like they’re laughing at you rather than with you. Ahren Belisle is a good example of this. If you watch some of his audience some people will wait for others to laugh first because it’s like they feel they need permission to enjoy a really funny guy who makes fun of himself all the time. The laughter when he’s really making fun of himself rather than his crazy retelling of a funny situation is often nervous and the jokes don’t land

The directly self deprecating ones tend to land with other people who share similar disabilities though. If you were to make the jokes to another autistic person who’s shared similar experiences they’d feel comfortable laughing with you.

Because it’s a DISABILITY buddy it’s something bad and means ur less than to the rest of the world people saying other wise are lying to u. Like saying someone without legs it’s just a regular guy.

Whereas when he’s talking about a funny situation, even one caused directly by his disability, rather than poking fun at himself specifically there’s more/easier laughter. And that’s aside from the “you shouldn’t talk about yourself that way!” Hecklers.

Lmao disability only means that to you, and people like you, my dude. Someone without legs is a regular guy. With a wheelchair, strong arms and maybe a cute dog or mini horse. Disability makes someone more interesting to be around because it’s a different life perspective. What makes disability suck is unregulated capitalism which expects people to produce as cheaply as possible as fast as possible like robots, and now some guys who are rich enough to do so want to replace everyone—

Lmao the first sign of civilization is survival of someone disabled- paraphrased Margaret Mead (talking about someone with a broken leg living because someone cared enough to feed and protect them while they healed). The only thing that makes someone subhuman is lack of empathy or complete elimination of cognition… so #2 I have some bad news for you….
