let my butter sit out as long as possible and whip it in my KitchenAid until it’s super light and almost white. Then I slowly add powdered sugar (I use less since I don’t like it too sweet) and a little vanilla. For the flowers, I pipe them on parchment, chill them to firm up, then place them on the cake. Some of them are placed straight on the cake though.
