Fun fact: if your lungs didn’t produce surfactant, they would collapse in on themselves from the surface tension of the moisture inside them. On a related note, if surface tension didn’t exist and our lungs didn’t need surfactant, we would lose a major part of the birthing process that signals to mothers that the fetus is done developing (essentially, that the fetus’ lungs are developed enough that they’re producing enough surfactant to survive outside the body without taking o2 from the mom)
