It’s a bit controversial but Alchemised is legit perfect for this. It’s a war story about two morally great characters in a dismal setting.

Joe Abercrombie does a great job of creating these bloody stories with epic fights while also not glorifying war. I’ve been reading Malazan Tales of the fallen as well, and that has been really good about showing how magic/gods can treat mortal beings as pawns in these super insane battles. Malazan has some really shocking scenes about the civilian toll of war as well, it just is a HUGE commitment.

The Black Company by Glen Cook fits this to a T. And it helped inspire Erickson for Malazan, which is another great choice
