i think this is a hot take because at least they're reading. who cares if they like what's popular, it's popular for a reason. we all have different levels of dedication to a hobby and someone focusing on the popular books is still more dedicated to reading than someone who doesn't read at all, but valid we're all allowed different opinions
i totally agree. it’s like guys that only have james patterson, george rr martin, stephen king, and catcher in the rye specifically and say they love reading and the booktok girlies who have 7000 books covered in faceless blobs and also a copy of a little life. where’s your taste? what do you value? what have you gotten out of reading the same book with one detail changed 1000 times?
this is less targeting the ‘typical reader’ and more the book creators who buy more books than they could ever read that essentially all have the same plot. if someone is just enjoying reading these extremely popular books there’s no problem, read what you want, but if you make a platform on encouraging people to overconsume books that they will never ever finish while not uplifting lesser known authors and actively praising problematic books while refusing to think critically about what they co
