idk if this is a hot take but i get the ick whenever i look at the shelf behind a self proclaimed book lover/content creator’s shelf and there isn’t a single unpopular book or author on it

It's very "My TikTok algorithm curates my personal taste for me and I'm too self-conscious to figure out what I actually value in literature and art" of them. And I don't mean this in the I'm not like other girls kinda way but in the anti-consumerist, anti-capitalist way

i think this is a hot take because at least they're reading. who cares if they like what's popular, it's popular for a reason. we all have different levels of dedication to a hobby and someone focusing on the popular books is still more dedicated to reading than someone who doesn't read at all, but valid we're all allowed different opinions

I get this. But I also pack away a lot of my books and only leave out the ones that really matter (like the ones I used in my thesis or ones I have signed)

i totally agree. it’s like guys that only have james patterson, george rr martin, stephen king, and catcher in the rye specifically and say they love reading and the booktok girlies who have 7000 books covered in faceless blobs and also a copy of a little life. where’s your taste? what do you value? what have you gotten out of reading the same book with one detail changed 1000 times?

this is less targeting the ‘typical reader’ and more the book creators who buy more books than they could ever read that essentially all have the same plot. if someone is just enjoying reading these extremely popular books there’s no problem, read what you want, but if you make a platform on encouraging people to overconsume books that they will never ever finish while not uplifting lesser known authors and actively praising problematic books while refusing to think critically about what they co

I get your point but some people really just read for fun and if it’s fun for them to read a book without meaning then so what?

there is no harm in reading a book without meaning. there IS harm in creating a platform on consumerism and encouraging the mindless purchasing of books with no examination of the book’s impact

no worries, looking back the original post seems like i am reference ‘book lovers’ and ‘content creators’ seperately rather than ‘book lover/content creator’ lol
