Hey this is ableist as all hell and we shouldn’t stand for discourse like this in an educated and inclusive community. Like this is evil levels of gatekeeping. How about we let people consume lit however they want to and can and shut up?

Fr like are we forgetting that some people have learning disabilities like dyslexia and it’s not easy for them to just read a paperback?!!!!

I wouldn’t always be able to find time in my schedule to read without audio books, they definitely make reading way more accessible in a ton of ways!!! Who are we to judge and demean people for the ways they choose to consume books?

I have chronic pain and can go hours in and out of consciousness, audio books are a life saver during these times. They make me feel like I’m not going completely crazy.

I saw a great post about the difference on tumblr. Basically, audio books are reading. But they do not improve literacy; if you are sighted just listening is fine but it is important to read letters visually because literacy is really important to navigate society. Blind people also need to learn literacy; braille. And the lack of access to braille services is already terrible and with the rise of audio formats its gotten worse. But if a blind kid only uses audiobooks they can’t read braille 1/2

Signs, just like if a sighted kid only uses audiobooks they can’t read text signs. Audiobooks are reading and are great, as long as people are literate. 2/2

There are people who will physically never be able to read but can enjoy a story through audiobook or film. There shouldn’t be an “as long as” attached to an accessibility tool.
