Super hot take: Sunrise on the Reaping has none of the thought, prose, or artistry that the rest of the books before it. It feels like fanfic. An afterthought full of cameos, bad pacing, and characters who lack depth. I wanted to like it so bad.

I can see how the writing style might’ve come across as more juvenile maybe, but I also felt like we were just in Haymitch’s head. I felt like everything was very deliberate and Collins did a wonderful job building off the breadcrumbs she left herself in the original series. The cameos just go to show how small and insular the victor pool is. I think it would’ve made less sense to introduce a bunch of new characters

I binged all of them at once and there was a NOTICEABLE dip in quality which broke my heart. Felt like a different person wrote it. The Ballad was the Peak of Collins’ writing and the fact that this came after is just so disappointing.

Sorry if this comes off as mean, I’m just very passionate about the books and that’s why I am strong with my criticisms.

Like the only one I felt like may have been a little hamfisted was Effie, but it’s a decent place to begin her origin with the districts and show the beginnings of her relationship with Haymitch. But unless we had two victors that die before the quarter quell or just didn’t get reaped, I’m not sure who else would’ve been mentors for 12 and I could totally understand why Collins didnt want to do that. Plus it fleshed out Wiress and Mags so much more and elevated them past the crazy ladies from

Catching Fire. Adds a new level to Katniss’s desire to ally with them and Haymitch’s wariness of her to align herself with them

I don’t think it was juvenile, just that it lacked depth or much of the soul that the other books had. And the pacing was so bad, everything happens in the last part of the book.

I mean I feel like that’s common. Build up to a climax that happens at the end. I sort of felt that way with Catching Fire too and that’s my favorite book of the series
