i think the catcher in the rye is a bad book because jd salinger failed to do something interesting with holden caulfield, like he forgot that the point of a story is for characters to experience some sort of development. the plot is also boring bc holden for pretty much the entire book refuses to do anything truly difficult, the events are super repetitive bc he just keeps pushing away the people who seem to care about him, and nothing ever actually gets resolved.
So true. I usually end up with the phrase “I didn’t say it was good I said I liked it.” Because I’ll just say it; my taste is questionable at best. I find myself enjoying some books others hated and hating books others loved. There are also books that fall into categories of “this is wonderfully written but also is offensive garbage” (IYKYK), or “this book is a cultural phenomenon and yet it’s also shit”
