Orbis was a complete waste of time and a complete misunderstanding of every character in the story. The whole “doctor has amnesia” thing is bad enough on screen, 𝘿𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝, and is worse in audio form. Not to mention making the Doctor so stupid he accidentally kills an entire race and blows up their home world. Idk how Nicholas Briggs let that story get to the recording stage.
That’s basically my take on it as well. Especially since it was following up a pretty good 2-part series finale with a crazy cliffhanger, particularly crazy since they had no idea BBC would pick up the range for a third series at the time. We went from one the return of one of the series’ most powerful villains straight into “Doctor plays with jellyfish for an hour and accidentally kills a bunch of people.” And to think it was the same writer behind The Infinite Quest…
And yes, I know The Infinite Quest isn’t exactly what one would call “good” but I personally like it. At least it has more than one distinct setting. Orbis is mostly a bottle-story and for that to work, even on screen, it needs to have strong character dynamics and a good main focus. Orbis doesn’t have either and struggles even harder with the lack of detail. By far the best part was the Doctor getting Lucie to smack him, although the fact that can bring back his memories is still weird.
Also, I do read actual books (well “listen” anyway. Same thing) but honestly going through the complete 60-story Sherlock Holmes collection earlier this summer got me in the mood for short stories, and considering the Doctor Who audio dramas are so much better than the actual show’s writing in recent years, I’ve just gotten swept up in the audio drama format again.
