Does anyone know any good sci fi books with interesting depictions of alien races? I find aliens a really interesting topic and I’m hoping to find something that goes into an in depth exploration of what an alien might be like (not just little green men)

Basic answer but project Hail Mary has unicellular alien lifeforms. Tbh that’s the only kind of “alien” I think could exist in real life

I just read Dawn by Octavia Butler it heavily features aliens and they're really weird and creepy

The Mercy of Gods by the author who did the Expanse series is doing some interesting things with this.

TRANSLATION STATE BY ANN LECKIE look I know I always rec her books but Oh My God the worldbuilding of various cultures - alien and not - is absolutely amazing from a prosaic and from a practical perspective

It’s an old comic book series, but alien legion is super cool for this topic. It has an in depth explanation of each character’s species before the story even begins and really tries to be out there when it comes to character design and incorporation

In the same vein, Provenance (also by Ann Leckie) deals heavily with the idea of how humans that have been raised/adopted into alien cultures might affect sci-fi politics and cultural-sociopolitical ramifications
