what are your tips on spotting if a book is written by AI before buying it?

If the cover is AI, AI has almost certainly been used to write some of the book too (attaching a brief guide on spotting AI cover art). Also, if an author pops up out of nowhere with a rapidly growing catalogue, that can be a hint too. If an author is using AI art to promote their book, that can also be an indicator (and if they didn’t use AI in their book, it’s still tacky and disrespectful to artists). There are also sometimes AI prompts left in the text itself.

Look up reviews online. Generally, if there’s nothing, it’s probably either a bad book or AI.

I will say the suggestion to run art through an AI detector is outdated on this guide. It used to be a better failsafe, but there is too much AI out there now that detection machines often get things wrong. They are AI too, after all.
