i felt that way for a long time, and i read poetry a lot, so i’m trying to see myself out of it. the way i think of it is, poetry does not have the same job as prose. you’re not supposed to get it, you’re supposed to feel it. it is supposed to be more like a painting than a story, it’s there to evoke emotion
there's all kinds of poetry!! A lot of amateur poetry definitely can sound pretentious, because it's trying to be. but poetry quite literally saved my life. I particularly love Ada Limón and Mary Oliver, but absolutely cannot stand Amanda Lovelace. I think there's a poet out there for everyone.
That’s so understandable!! For me I love reading and writing poetry. But I’m pretty straight to the point and I’m not trying too hard to make it sound like such an inspirational poem which is what can make it so confusing and pretentious in my opinion. Just get straight to the point— that’s just how I see poetry. And there are still beautifully written poems that are a bit confusing.
