This may be controversial but I’m really not a poetry person at all. I think I’m one of those people who just doesn’t “get” poetry. It can feel annoying or pretentious or just confusing

Completely get it, I can’t tell the difference between the greats and a random highschool poem.

It’s so goddamn pretentious. I like it when they tell a story, but more often I just want them to get to the damn point

i felt that way for a long time, and i read poetry a lot, so i’m trying to see myself out of it. the way i think of it is, poetry does not have the same job as prose. you’re not supposed to get it, you’re supposed to feel it. it is supposed to be more like a painting than a story, it’s there to evoke emotion

there's all kinds of poetry!! A lot of amateur poetry definitely can sound pretentious, because it's trying to be. but poetry quite literally saved my life. I particularly love Ada Limón and Mary Oliver, but absolutely cannot stand Amanda Lovelace. I think there's a poet out there for everyone.

It’s mostly the journey, I’m not sure what quote that made it click for me but poetry is a word machine that makes a ‘poetical’ frame of mind. Some work on you some don’t but when they hit they really hit.

For me Robert Frost is the only poet I’ve found who’s works really resonate with me

That’s so understandable!! For me I love reading and writing poetry. But I’m pretty straight to the point and I’m not trying too hard to make it sound like such an inspirational poem which is what can make it so confusing and pretentious in my opinion. Just get straight to the point— that’s just how I see poetry. And there are still beautifully written poems that are a bit confusing.

Same bro, same. Poetry just kinda falls flat for me because it seems like poets try too hard, its gotta feel genuine ya know? That said, some poetry I love (Dulce Et Decorum Est is great), but most I just dont enjoy.
