Why do people not like Red Rising? Looking for other opinions because I love the series

Honestly it’s probably mostly people who have only read the first book. I love the series but will admit that the first is definitely the weakest, a little ya and with juvenile writing. I wouldn’t have continued if I didn’t hear so many people lauding the rest of the series and I’m so glad I did. Or you always have those people who think it’s “cool” to hate on something that’s popular with no other legitimate reason other than look at me I’m different

Cuz the author made an ignorant post…which he educated himself and then took down. Like a normal person. I’m glad he took the opportunity to correct his ignorance. It’s a great series! I think you should give it a shot. Some also say the female characters are poorly written. However, the first one we meet we don’t know too well and the second gets more developed as the story progresses. In fact, I found myself relating to her a lot at times.

It felt like it was very obviously written by a man - hyper masculinity in the male characters which I didn’t like

I didn’t really see that. Darrow has probably been my favorite male mc. He’s very flawed and pretty soft internally, he’s conflicted and in love. Yeah there’s so of that male author aura farming but he’s also venerable at times in a not overly done way. I thought it was a breath of fresh air compared to flat, stereotypical mmcs that I’ve been reading in most fantasy lately.

That is, favorite male mc written by a male author.

One thing I remember sticking out to me was how he made a point to always bring up how the women were females and that made them weaker - like “oh big balls this big balls that”

I don’t read much fantasy so ig not much exposure to insufferable mmc

A lot of the female characters are very strong parts of the story and Victra and Mustang are strong female characters with conflicts of their own

I mean, he is a teenage boy but I think his opinions changed a bit as the books went on

I wanted to like it. I picked it up a few different times but couldn’t get into it. A guy also recommended it to me so maybe I just went in with a certain mindset

The first book is definitely the weakest. All the other books are FAR better, like shockingly better.

Yeah, I read it before all the men got to it. Years ago. Hell, I’m a woman and my boss who’s also a woman, loves it. I would at least get through the first book and try the second before you completely write it off. Because the plot, characters, and overall tone change so much.

I think the bros getting to it has done some damage to what the girlies think of it so a lot of them are resistant to read it and tolerate a male mc. I mean, Darrow is pretty tolerable for a 15 yo boy, those mfs are evil. He just loves his wife and wants to be happy. Yeah he has notions about women since their society segregated the lower classes’ jobs heavily based on gender. But that changes very quickly.

That’s so valid. However, if you read the poppy war and loved that I would consider giving RR another shot in the future maybe ❤️

Oh my gosh you are in for a ride! It’s probably the only series I’ve read recently that each book is significantly better than the last 💪

He didn’t take it down. He just had it as a temporary story anyway. It went down because of time, not because he learned anything. Considering right after this, he was defending Henry Kissinger (also in his stories, so once again, not taken down). He is pro oppressor while writing anti oppressor lit. That is why some refuse to read or recommend his work.
