From my perspective, OP wasn’t necessarily asking about books to teach, but books to recommend and talk to students about. Like “if you liked X you might also enjoy Y”. I hope your school district doesn’t have rules restricting those kinds of conversations.

I had a lot worse books in my high school library and I live in a pretty religious (Mormon) city that’s also a red city. I had those books you said were not appropriate in my library and others beyond them too. It doesn’t hurt to suggest them because, yes you said there are factors in play that can limit it, but providing the most options possible is best and people are bringing great suggestions. Cast a wide net and see what sticks

That sucks, crazy how things have changed so much in so few years. I graduated high school in 2022, if it wasn’t for the librarian recommending me books I probably wouldn’t be a reader today. A lot of them I had to get from the public library, but we did still have ToG and similar titles in the school library too (tho like OP says it was before the last books came out) I do know that the librarian is still there tho and doesn’t care if she gets in trouble for recommending an unapproved book lmao

the specific grade and how progressive the area of the school is are usually the biggest factors for anyone curious, whats ok in 12th grade might be immediately rejected for 9th and even then different districts have their own specific rules and reasonings for whats permitted reading

ACOTAR/Throne of glass series and similar recs, depending on district anything with queer characters, Circe depending on how strict the district is and the specific grade, just to name a few that stood out when I looked through

Series in general can also be iffy if the first book/book youre selecting doesnt work as a standalone especially if the series eventually has disallowed content. Using the throne of glass example I know my district personally would not allow that because of content later in the series even though throne of glass itself is fine.

I understand! Im a school librarian in a pretty liberal town and just speaking from experience. What we perceive as readers is completely different from what a school board approving lesson literature will perceive so the post was more for that purpose. Whats allowed in my library and whats allowed to be taught in classes in my school is completely different so unless youre in the system you wouldnt really know whats actually reasonable to recommend :) wasnt meant to be negative at all

Also understandable! Those conversations arent prohibited at all but if it wasnt approved for class or the library its typically not advisable to recommend it just to protect the teacher. Rejections are for a reason even if we disagree and boards can be really strict about what content we promote at school if say a parent were to complain just as an example :)

That makes sense. Props to you for being a teacher and dealing with the thousand different things outside of teaching that make your job harder. You really are making a difference!
