Hi book club. I like the idea of reading a lot and i have curiosity for books, but when it comes to reading my brain is under stimulated and starts drifting away after minutes. I feel like you guys would be the experts in reading. Can I ask for advice?

I’ve also found that listening to the audio book while reading the physical book can help with focus! It also helps me read faster lol. I used to do this for the boring books I had to read in school bc they just would not hold my attention

Echoing what #1 said for sure. I also like using noise canceling headphones. Idk why, but if I turn on the noise canceling, it really locks me in. Also, you might enjoy reading some high-concept comics. Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing is one of the best things I’ve ever read, and the artwork is incredible which draws you in and keeps you focused on the story. Lmk if you’d like recommendations 🤗

what really helps me sometimes is chewing gum and/or listening to instrumental music. it can help to have some other nonintrusive stimuli

i like to find a long “ambiance” video that matches the vibe of the book i’m reading. for me it helps if the music is very gentle and repetitive enough to fade into the background, but keep that wandering side of my brain busy so i can focus on the book. for example, i’m reading a book with a medieval/fantasy setting right now and playing a video of Secunda from Skyrim extended to several hours long

I recommend music and soemthing to drink/snack on. All and all though, especially for peiole eith short attention spans (ei me) it can be hard but especially towards the beginning do the book. I like to follow the 120 page rule ehich is where you try to get to 120 pages and if you’re not interested by then, you’ll never be, but also in hunting for that 120th page I often find myself getting lost in the book and forgetting I’m pushing to that page so once I’m there, I’m hooked

Maybe try listening to an audiobook while drawing, that way your brain is kept active

if you don’t have youtube premium though, definitely search for videos that say “no mid-roll ads”

the 120-page rule is actually genius
