I’m an English MA student and you best bet I’m reading fun smutty romance between the 19 mark twain works I have to read for my summer class. Horror and romance are my fav genres outside of lit studies, and I get about as much out of each genre as the next. All books have value and can teach us things.
HARD AGREE! I’m an english lit major and i love me a classic any day of the week… that being said im currently reading a cowboy romance and it’s nothing but vibes. People who have a superiority complex because they read top notch literature and nothing else AND ALSO brag about it are seriously some of the most annoying mofos i’ve ever met.
i like to say im a ‘pretentious’ reader not because i only read classics but because i have standards for my fun reads. like i can always see why someone likes something that i don’t but i also am firm on the fact that acotar was probably one of the worst written books i’ve ever read.
Also it’s not the classics that are pretentious, it’s the people like you who get on a high horse and say it’s debasing to enjoy a recreational activity purely for recreation. I love classics. I also love slop. It’s not mutually exclusive and it literally doesn’t matter because I read for my own enjoyment and nothing else
So my favorite book is a “for fun” book. It’s called society of irregular witches. It’s not smut, it’s not really romance, it’s just a fun book. You think that that is what that is? Really dude? Yeah let people enjoy things. You’re pushing people away from reading as a whole which is a bad thing to do. You suck lmao.
Having an English BA, I love to read for fun, but I do get critical of some of the fun books 😪 But good fun books slap—I just finished Project Hail Mary and omg that was amazing. What’s your research interest for your MA? I want to pursue an MA and PhD eventually, but I don’t have the funds for it rn
Funding is hard but you should def look into your school’s grad assistantship programs! I’m a writing tutor GA and it pays my tuition. My focus is mainly writing studies/ comp rhet, but aside from writing classes and portfolio, my special interest (and what I’ll take into my PhD) is literature in video games! Just wrote a big essay about Inferno’s influence on misc horror games :)
