unfortunately this is exactly what they want. best case scenario. it’s literally dystopian. textbook fascism. I’m genuinely horrified at the direction this country is going in

i want to preface this by saying, i do not agree that children cannot bring their books from home; i think it's ridiculous and extremely absurd. i'm interested in knowing what law or legislation DeSantis has enacted, because i'm not finding anything about him specifically being the cause of this? if it's the school district that's not allowing it, then that's on their school board and it's disgusting

Fascists LOVE the uneducated. Making children fearful of outside knowledge sadly is what they want.

I think this will backfire. I think it will embolden kids into reading, and radicalize them.

Kids should be able to read the books they want and question the world and have their own opinions without being scared to express them

I’m majoring in elementary ed and this makes me so upset I took a class that focused only on banned books and why they are banned and the reasons are ridiculous

We live in FL and all my kids take their own books to school. This is not a state issue.

I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple of years the kids won’t know how to read.

I mean they already don’t know how to read but yeah I’m sure maga would be thrilled to introduce newspeak to this country

It might not be specific legislation that DeSantis passed, but it’s the environment in Florida that DeSantis has fostered. And iirc (correct me if I’m wrong), he did support legislation supporting book banning in libraries and classrooms

I don’t think so. Kids, in general, will listen to authority figures. They’re scared of getting in trouble. Out of people who would rebel, more would be kids than adults, but if teachers are telling kids that books are bad and parents (who may not agree but don’t want their kids getting in trouble) back they up, a lot of kids will just accept that as how things are

That’s what makes authoritarian regimes so scary. You start with impressionable kids and move out from there. Obviously I hope I’m wrong and that the government isn’t as sinister as it seems, or if it is, that people see through it and don’t let them get their way, but every day I lose more hope so idk I’m trying to be realistic

You’re acting like these 7 year olds know how to do any of that. They’re 7 they’re going to listen to the grownup

I mean I don’t think the seven year olds are gonna go out and like overthrow the government, I just think it’ll be a formative memory for them. At some point they’ll question why they were barred from bringing in books. And maybe some won’t. Who knows

HB1069, 1539 are the primary antagonists of these environments and issues, and both were championed by desantis

if you're on yikyak with school-aged children, something is wrong, but i'll take the bait anyways the most extreme of our state bills causing these issues have either been overturned or clarified to be narrower, but some counties are still implementint extreme policy versions. florida is absolutely suffering from rollbacks to childhood literacy and our attempts to ban unsavory books is playing a major part in that
