Have any of you read The Midnight Library? I want to see if it would be a recommendation from any of you

I enjoyed it, but I did think the protagonist was a bit annoying with her inability to see past her flaws. It makes her more human, yeah, but I hoped for more growth over the story. It just kind of felt like she randomly decided to live again, instead of genuinely WANTING to. I also agree with a few other commenters on it portraying meds and mental health as “bad,” but I can understand why it was portrayed that way

I personally absolutely loved it and would highly recommend. It’s just a very cool concept and very well written.

it’s bad. frankie’s shelf on youtube has a video explaining all the reasons why

Nah not from me personally. I get that it was a big help to a lot of people, but to me it read “you have depression? have you just tried being happy instead???” and “why take meds (bad, forever, mental health) when you could just not be sad (good, forever, normal)”

It’s in my top 10 do not recommend books. I personally did not enjoy and thought it was a waste of time to read. It’s just an odd book all together

How would you base the book? Like make a concept of how it read like #3 did. I know it would be like the opposite description for you but I would like more insight

Im not watching that. Could you summarize each reason?

Like what the other commenter said, the portrayal of mental illness wasnt it for me. I also just didnt find the plot and overall message to be that compelling. Like you could tell from the start what the author was trying to say. Nothing profound or exciting imo

Okay so could you respond to this comment as if you were putting in an official GoodReads (or any website) review?

What exactly was the author saying tho? Im curious. And I dont mean like a good spinoff message, I mean the actual message you got from reading the book

Idk how much youve read the synopsis. But it was like "oh youre suicidal? Midlife crisis? Depressed? Well actually why dont you just enjoy the present 🥰🥰🥰 look at all these other variations of your life! Misery exists there too, so be happy in the current normal boring life you have" And *poof* the will to live can return just like that🫰 it's just cheesy and lacks nuance

1: bad writing. a lot of silly metaphors that don’t add anything to the story 2: frustrating premise. she’s plopped into every other version of her life to “see what it’s like” but never has any of their memories so she’s just fumbling through every interaction?? that’s not an accurate representation of what it would be like if she never knows what’s going on 3: messaging. so heavy handed, disses on anti depressants, poses “just be grateful for what you have” as the cure for depression, implies

that becoming a wife and mother are the catalyst for solving all of her problems. also 2.5 it’s so repetitive the structure gets exhausting and boring really fast

My understanding is that the main character is the narrator, and her perception of getting help with mental health is a negative thing. Her brain was basically trying to get her to want to live again, but it was still prejudiced against proper health care. I think the premise is good, but I do think it should’ve been tweaked some more before publishing

also there’s a difference between not wanting to die and not wanting to get mauled by a polar bear!!!
