it has advanced society so far and so fast that the “common people” have not had a chance to work with it rather than for it. and without warning the revolution has upended so many jobs. we are starting to see it with AI, but not many have grasped that in a not so distant future many jobs will become obsolete due to AI. i think many people see it as a possibility but not so much a reality and that is what is terrifying about it. or hell maybe it’s 2:00 am and i’m tired and over thinking shit.

That has been the M.O. of advancement since the industrial revolution; Babel is drawing an allegory rooted in history that is temporaneous to its setting. You should research the luddite movement. They were not just anti-technology whackos. They were the first labor rights movement. I do believe they are directly referenced later on in Babel if they haven't been yet where you are in the book

People are so habituated and inclined to the social inequity that technological progress creates because we (at least in America) broadly share in the luxuries created and see a billionaire in all of ourselves. But somehow, having your needs met without anxiety is a luxury restricted to the wealthy; people are stifled with television, ice cream, and high fructose corn syrup while our futures are commodified and turned into greater wealth for the owning-most people and families in the world.
