It’s honestly inspiring me to write again. I read a couple booktok books and when I tell you I’ve read better on wattpad circa 2012. I have better writing in my fanfic diary from when I was 11. This shit ass. We need to bring back having standards and actually editing books

It’s truly not that easy. I say as a small author with tons of friends in erotic lit. It still takes a marketing budget or being pretty and good at talking on social media to be successful most of the time. You can’t just write smut and bam! success. I WISH it was that easy. Give people some credit. Whether they gamed they system or not, they still did what many can’t.

There are Wattpad books better than most of these writers now in days and the sad part is most of these writers started on Wattpad but yk like let’s evolve bro

BOOKTOK is fake. Like you’re telling me all these books and the book summary is crap. Some of them are straight up SA. Oh that’s def across genres too.

There are some genuinely good books on Wattpad with authors that write like Jane Austen but they don’t get the chance to publish yet these people do ☹️

fr silver elite is such a good example of this. apparently a NYT bestselling author who wanted to write “sexy dystopian” and I haven’t seen a single good thing about it, everyone says it’s so shallow and low key feels like it’s written by ai and the smut is worse than fanfic

Right! And I’ve read some incredible indie pub erotic romance that has 3 reviews on Goodreads. But smut is in NO way a fast trip to success and it always annoys me when people think it is. Yes sex sells, but you have to be able to spend the time or money SELLING it still.

it’s all people who haven’t taken the time to create their niche looking at the first thing that pops up when they Google “booktok” or whatever. they see it’s all romance (I hesitate to even call it smut as most isn’t straight erotica like they like to make you think) and think all romance sells

I spent a lot of time on the thriller side of TikTok and lemme tell you there are some awful thrillers out there that are super popular (both old and new) so that’s like me looking at that and going “frida McFadden is ruining the thriller genre” or “all you need to do is write a book with gory violence and it’ll sell regardless of quality”

THANK YOU all of this! I am also a horror reader (horror and romance are my fav genres) and there aren’t comments like this about other genres like there are about romance. People read the most visible 3 books on tik tok and think that’s the whole world, when hundreds of great book that aren’t based around tropes and copying success come out in indie and small press circles every day.
