It’s truly not that easy. I say as a small author with tons of friends in erotic lit. It still takes a marketing budget or being pretty and good at talking on social media to be successful most of the time. You can’t just write smut and bam! success. I WISH it was that easy. Give people some credit. Whether they gamed they system or not, they still did what many can’t.
it’s all people who haven’t taken the time to create their niche looking at the first thing that pops up when they Google “booktok” or whatever. they see it’s all romance (I hesitate to even call it smut as most isn’t straight erotica like they like to make you think) and think all romance sells
I spent a lot of time on the thriller side of TikTok and lemme tell you there are some awful thrillers out there that are super popular (both old and new) so that’s like me looking at that and going “frida McFadden is ruining the thriller genre” or “all you need to do is write a book with gory violence and it’ll sell regardless of quality”
THANK YOU all of this! I am also a horror reader (horror and romance are my fav genres) and there aren’t comments like this about other genres like there are about romance. People read the most visible 3 books on tik tok and think that’s the whole world, when hundreds of great book that aren’t based around tropes and copying success come out in indie and small press circles every day.
