I feel like TS fans have rose tinted glasses on when it comes to every one of her songs. As someone who doesn’t really vibe with (most) of her music, I think objectively, her use of Ophelia is inaccurate at best. Girly killed herself, she didn’t just drown in her loneliness. She was used by every man in her life and she needed freedom. Not another man. I won’t say it isn’t kinda catchy, but content wise, it is just a miss. A lot of the lyrics on this album are rough.

Thank you, you were able to put it into words. I have a degree in theater and directed a production of Hamlet so I can say it seems like TS doesnt know Shakespeare well. I had a swiftie tell me “well actually, if you watch the LOASG in-theater movie presentation, you would see her say that she actually really likes Shakespeare and started reading it recently” like girl, if she read Hamlet and said “wow, Ophelia really needed a better man to save her” that’s embarrassing

So real. And no hate to swifties, but I really feel like a lot of them are past the point of thinking about what they’re listening to and just love it because it’s her. Which is fine, but don’t get like angry with people for analyzing her lyrics from a more objective standpoint. Like what you like, my criticism isn’t a reflection of your taste. But I love Hamlet and I do have thoughts about how Ophelia’s character is (mis)used here.

Like back in my Lana Del Rey phase, I was critical of her use of Lolita quotes in songs too. A lot of artists & creators have bad literature takes. Hell, look at the Twilight series and how Bella gets EVERY one of her lit takes so very wrong. It happens. No artist is infallible. Espec Taylor. I don’t hate her or anything. But a lot of folks really like to overlook some of the suspicious racial undertones in her music, the fact that she was number 1 in jet emissions, kept dating conservatives…
