conniptions

Racially changing characters to fit diversity is racist in general. But it’s also a free country dawg, people can image characters however they want, it’s free will, which is why imagination is so powerful.

It’s not racist to want to see a character you love look like you or the people around you in fan art. Either way is fine. However it’s definitely beneficial to add diversity to a story that’s completely white. Why? There’s tons of American media where it’s an all white cast but that doesn’t reflect our actual makeup. No one deserves to never see themselves reflected in media. If you disagree it’s because you were blessed to have never experienced the alternative.

That’s what I do. I actually usually skip over when a character is described bc I don’t care/never imagine it how the author describes it

You can imagine characters however you want, but when a story line is being turned into production, people purposefully fan casting people who don’t fit the descriptions and feel the need to white wash them, is infact racist. I’m sorry but being so eager to change the race of a POC to white is very disturbing. Sorry not sorry

Example: I was watching a group of younger girls before Princess & the frog came out. They were deciding which Princess they would play. A brunette as Cinderella, a blonde as Belle, etc. until the little black girl said she wanted to be Ariel. Then suddenly it was “U can’t! U don’t look like her!” I checked it QUICKLY & pointed out that none of them looked like the characters they chose either. Diversity is important because it reminds people that anyone can play a fictional character.

That’s fine, and that wasn’t the point of my post. My post is about people who fan cast and purposefully white wash. You can skip over descriptions but to say one is white when they are not is not fair nor is it right. I change characteristics but I never change the race, even with white characters, because sometimes it’s important to their character.

I was responding to the person who reposted your post. Not yours. I can’t stand people who only focus on one part of the conversation/cant move on. There’s multiple parts of every topic

And I never said a character was POC and I imagine them white

I do agree to some extent. I personally just find it distasteful to the story when it gets adapted into film and any character is purposefully racially casted to fit the current media biased agenda. Diversity is lovely, speaking as a poc individual, but I find it rather disturbing that the media goes out of its way to make everything diverse, it feels fake to me. It’s also why I think new stories should include diversity by choice but not as the focal point, does that make more sense?

You’re arguing another point which is different from mine and I still agree. You can agree that white washing is racist because it is. Especially when you’re adamant about it

I mean the conversation at hand literally stems from mine.. so my part of the conversation is important as I’m the one that started this discussion.

I think it’s all racist. White, black, yellow washing it doesn’t matter. If you take a character and reimagine it differently that’s fine, but when you intentionally do it for profit or for media I think it’s morally wrong. no culture deserves to be changed b/c you think one is more important than the other. I don’t think it’s beneficial to write over another character’s storyline regardless of how were described. So yes I agree, washing black white etc is all wrong.
