I will never stop laughing when people say “I just couldn’t get into the poppy war. I can’t root for the mc she’s not a good person.” It’s almost like that’s the point of the book!! It’s almost like it’s IN THE SUMMARY ON THE BACK.

My girl RF Kuang loves to write a main character with questionable morals! That’s her thing

read the entire first book and half of the second, I loved the non-Western worldbuilding. but oml, the character writing was so bad. I hope the author improves on that for her next series because I loved the world but couldn’t stick it out. it ticked me off too much how consistently flat the characters were.

its not even the fact that she easnt a good person that ticked me off - she was straight up stupid

I couldnt get into it, but honestly the mc was probably the best part. It was the writing/pacing that did it in for me

I will say that I actually agree. The pacing was a bit off, regardless I usually see most people complain about Rin.

like the MC was ehhh… ok ig… but everyone else just felt incredibly basic. like I read a book on character archetypes and write myself, so maybe I’m just jaded, but I wasn’t rooting for ANY of the characters bc they all felt like stereotypes. so now I’m stuck with the unrelatable, annoying MC and a bunch of cardboard cutouts.

that’s also the point. she was an abused war orphan leading troops into WAR as a child it’s based on her immaturity and lack of experience and just throwing kids into hellish situations
