Okay I don’t want to start anything big, but how the heck is Barnes and nobles still open?? I needed a book for a friend last minute and my local used stores didn’t have it. Decided to get a book for me too, why not. 44 DOLLARS. Both paperback 😳

FINALLY SOMEONES BRAVE TO ADMIT IT. Not all of us want to spend 3x the price of books for “nostalgia”

The last time I spent 44 dollars on books I got 8 of them 🫠

I also blame the inflation of everything why is the book $20 for a paperback it used to be $10. The last paperback I paid for was $15 each. I’m going back to books a million when I can’t find my copies bc I’ve been to Walmart, Target, and the local book store and they didn’t have it

people are so oddly obsessed with purchasing new books rather than used and it’s strange 😭

Literally it’s so expensive and they pay like shit

Barnes and Noble does not control the prices that is solely based on the publishers.

This is exactly why I always get my books from Amazon. 1 I have prime so they are cheaper than regular Amazon prices and they come really quick most of the time 2 were in college how are we supposed to support our reading at $20 a book???? Hell no. I will say, there’s been a few books that come with small misprints. I got a Colleen Hoover book (it wasn’t supporting her dw) and the side said “coleen” instead of Colleen. But idgaf it was $8

Try buying used when you can!! My local used bookstore has literally 100k+ books all for about $7 or less

Honestly not the worst in the world. I was trying to buy a birthday gift for my dad, walked into a books & books. Picked out one on architecture I thought he’d love and took it up to the counter. FUCKING $160! Put that shit right back. And before you ask, none of the books in the store had prices on it.

Owning books was and still is a luxury. Books have never been cheap!

Oh I absolutely do! I don’t think I’ve bought a new book in the last 5 years (until now) Unfortunately I like to procrastinate and needed the book soon, I went to three different used stores before I gave up and went to Barnes 😅

I have the worst luck with thriftbooks. I’ve bought from them several times and the condition is always way worse than described 😔 I only use it now to redeem my free book coupons cause who cares what it looks like when all you have to pay is the 2 dollar shipping

I love my used books 😭 my library’s a little eclectic as it is so the vibe just fits, but I personally can’t stand a shelf where all the books are near identical and the same height and everything. I have multiple series where one’s paperback, another’s mass market, and one’s a hardcover missing a dust jacket. It adds character. (And the spines are cracked on a lot of them🤭)

I get where you’re coming from but I’m a little protective of my shelves lol. I’ve had a couple bad experiences in the past (they replaced the books, which I’m grateful for, but I would prefer to just get my original copy back). My friend now lives in another state, we don’t see each other often, and I don’t know how long I could look at the empty spot on my shelf 🫣

Not new for sure, but I’ve gotten loads of used books for super cheap. A lot of them are even like new. Everybody’s different, for me personally I like a larger collection but can’t justify the cost of getting all of them new. It adds up fast

I didn’t even know I got downvoted lol. I remember getting mad about the prices at B&N and had to watch videos and look into it.

I know it’s the publisher who sets the prices, and I definitely don’t blame Barnes employees or anything like that. The store’s just at the top of the food chain and, while still being the publishers fault, I needed to rage about a paperback being 20 dollars 😅. It’s a wider spread issue than one store and makes me appreciate my local used stores so much more.

I agreed with you that new books are not typically cheap, but used often are. I didn’t say anything about being luxurious because I actually disagree. They are definitely a want rather than a need, but I don’t see anyone who owns books as living a luxurious lifestyle. I’d save that for people with fancy cars, expensive jewelry ... There are many ways to get cheap books and with the literacy they can help provide they really do still have a use, a lot of luxury items are just for appearances

Things like buying new books is a luxury. Just because it has a purpose doesn’t make it not a luxury suddenly. A library book works the same as a brandnew one same a mercades benz works the same as a toyota. Considering the number of people in poverty spending my weekly grocery bill on books is a luxury

That’s why I (and a ton of other people) don’t buy new books and what this whole thread is saying with the benefits/savings of buying used 😭. But even if people want to spend their whole paycheck on books (used or new), that’s their choice, they earned the money, they can choose what to do with it. Libraries are great, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting your own collection too
