I’m gonna offend some people by saying this I’m really sorry. Does The Handmaid’s Tale get better? I’m having a hard time connecting with the story like. At all. I usually like stories told like this but it just feels very lacking to me

You’re def not required to finish a book you’re not enjoying but you’re not gonna get a “it gets better” answer for this one because the book maintains its pacing well. If you don’t like it now, that is probably just you.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who could really never get into the story

Fair enough. And I knew people would downvote this because so many people love the book. It’s just idk. Having a hard time getting into it. I just really don’t like to DNF books and I feel bad… everyone loves this book and I feel bad I may not be appreciating it to its full potential

I just wonder if you were expecting something else out of it than what it is. Not saying that’s the case. I just know sometimes that happens with folks especially with classics.

Books have their own potentials to each reader, it’s really dumb to downvote for an opinion. I guarantee that they have books they don’t like that others do. And this is a book club specifically meant for discussing books, if everyone had the same opinion (or if everyone immediately hates on someone for having an opinion) it kinda defeats the purpose. I hate to dnf as well, I have several that “I’m coming back to” lol, but don’t feel bad for it

I can totally see how maybe you would have different expectations going into the book considering how much media attention it’s gotten, that can warp our expectations and therefore perceptions when we finally read it. Personally I loved it, but you’re entirely entitled to your opinion! I couldn’t get into 1984 for example, and had to DNF it otherwise I knew it would turn into a reading slump- I can still recognize it’s a culturally important book, it just wasn’t written for me and that’s ok :)

That’s how I feel about this book. The message I think is incredibly important and I think the world that it’s set in is interesting as well it’s just the story may not be written for me
