Tbh as an editor, editing is not for the weak. It becomes increasingly hard while on the job to enjoy casual reading because your editing brain is often always on (espec if you’re a copywriter that tweaks phrasing and flow rather than just a proofreader too). And you’ll realize that you’re going to make mistakes too, no matter how many passes you give the manuscript. It’s a labor of love for sure.
That being said, you should still try *if* you’re passionate about it. Not just if you think you can do better than other editors. You must love the work, and you must be prepared to edit things you’re not already into. Not every assignment will be Fourth Wing and cute romance. EliteEditing is an easy enough company to get into contract work that may give you an idea of what it truly entails (for meh pay, but it’s a starter). Internships are also a great place to start.
I’d assume soliciting manuscripts is for higher levels, though reading manuscripts is grunt work. but op didn’t specify whether they mean developmental edits or copy/line edits which can both very much be part of an editor’s job. just because op’s joke post didn’t include everything an editor does doesn’t mean that what they said isn’t part of editing
