I’m convinced I should be hired as an editor (I have a degree in fine arts) cause the book I just read was full of errors and I had to mentally fix all of them

Lowkey I’m also thinking about it. Powerless and Fourth Wing are in desperate need of editing. When I read them I kept having to take breaks cuz it felt like my experience was being infringed upon by my constant need to correct the writing.

Tbh as an editor, editing is not for the weak. It becomes increasingly hard while on the job to enjoy casual reading because your editing brain is often always on (espec if you’re a copywriter that tweaks phrasing and flow rather than just a proofreader too). And you’ll realize that you’re going to make mistakes too, no matter how many passes you give the manuscript. It’s a labor of love for sure.

Honestly feel like it could be fun, but I don’t have any qualifications degree wise, and I’m not sure I can endure going back to college (I just graduated in May)

For me it was Love and Gelato, super cute book, but some of the mistakes had me questioning if it was edited at all haha

i’m sure most ppl in that industry have gotten by with a bachelor’s but i’d do more research into seeing if you could get by with experience like your own writing or an apprenticeship at a publishing house or working under an editor. you never know what you might find

what do editors do if not correct errors in the books they’re assigned?

solicit manuscripts, read manuscripts, determine marketability of manuscripts, provide high order developmental feedback about plot, character, how to revise the manuscript for the market, work with authors throughout the revision process…

That being said, you should still try *if* you’re passionate about it. Not just if you think you can do better than other editors. You must love the work, and you must be prepared to edit things you’re not already into. Not every assignment will be Fourth Wing and cute romance. EliteEditing is an easy enough company to get into contract work that may give you an idea of what it truly entails (for meh pay, but it’s a starter). Internships are also a great place to start.

Thanks! I’m not sure it’s something I really really want to do. The book I was reading yesterday just has so many errors it made me laugh, especially because I feel it’s a popular book or at least once was. I will make note of that company for the future. Thanks!

Honestly it wasn’t that serious of a post! The book I was reading just had a lot of obvious errors that made me laugh.

I have a bachelor’s but it’s a fine arts degree, I only took 3 English classes in college

I’d assume soliciting manuscripts is for higher levels, though reading manuscripts is grunt work. but op didn’t specify whether they mean developmental edits or copy/line edits which can both very much be part of an editor’s job. just because op’s joke post didn’t include everything an editor does doesn’t mean that what they said isn’t part of editing
