A toenail comes to life while being sucked by a man. The saliva imbues it with life essence, where the woman screams as the toenail peels itself off of the foot of the woman. Her screams echo through the dark neighborhood as the toenail hops away, leaving behind a trail of blood and bits of flesh dripping off of its sides. It forges ahead into a destiny unbeknownst to itself, in search of others like him… as he questions his pasts, present and the future.

the book takes place in a place called garner county, and when girls turn 16 here they’re thought to have a wicked magic so they are banished to live in the woods in an encampment for a year so that they will come home “purified” for marriage. this time is called the grace year. one of the biggest issues are poachers who try to take the girls and sell them on the black market, but the biggest issue of all is the girls turning against each other
