Put it in a big plastic baggy. The ziploc type, with thick plastic. It’s not perfect but it’ll protect it from the worst. I do the same for my sketchbook

I usually wrap mine in a layer of my clothing by tucking inside a shirt

i have a book pouch that i usually use when i dont want my books to get too roughed up. its basically just a fabric pouch with a zipper big enough to hold most size books.
