No but for real, with now two generations who are coming into high school with reading comprehension of 6th grade or worse, ANY reading and critical thinking is an improvement. Would I prefer we read more complex stuff? Yes, but this is good!
Just a reminder, reading comics/manga/graphic novels is still reading. Idc what yall say! Get off your high horse and stop thinking books are the only way to read. Mfs think listening to an audio book is reading so why cant comics be readin?!

I don’t get it, it’s so scary. I hated reading in school yet had a reading level of a 12th grader by age 7. I feel like kids not being able to read and comprehend things is actually insane. People should be able to read what they want but understand most things regardless of enjoyment

This is such a huge problem, we are building an app to help parents motivate their kids to read and get into the habit early. Not advertising it here or anything but we are putting a lot into it now. This community is great for feedback

As the OP of the post, You had me till you said “would i prefer we read more the complex stuff” who cares?! Reading is reading. Idk why everyone thinks you have to read this intricate big backed booked just to say you’re reading. I’m a grown man but I’m also autistic and disabled, i just read Captain Underpants last week cause i had so much brain fog i couldn’t read what yall consider a “real” book This way of thinking is just so weird to me. Who cares what people read, they’re still reading

I don’t think you NEED to, I don’t care what you read, reading anything at this point is great. I’m not going to judge you less if you don’t read certain books. There’s some literature I personally think is very important and I would like more people to read and understand AS THEY ARE ABLE. That’s not to say you aren’t capable if you don’t.

The main point, which didn’t come across, is people turn away from stuff like The Hunger Games because they “don’t like the idea of children killing each other” when that’s not the point. You’re absolutely right to not like that idea, it’s uncomfortable, but to shy away completely from certain media because you “don’t like the idea” isn’t something I agree with

I hated reading as well, but I appreciate what the required readings taught me. Again, I don’t care what people engage with and read, literally any amount of interest in reading is significantly better than what we have right now. However, I personally think there’s some literature we need to engage with more than we are.

And that’s the issue, just because you’re okay with subjecting yourself to that is cool but to say other people should also subject themselves to it is weird. If they dont like it they dont like it, forcing them to read it cause *you* think its important is weird. Ive never read the hunger games and dont plan to.. cause i dont want to🤷🏼‍♂️ i dont want to read about people dying and fighting for their life. Im already living that shit, why would i want to read it. Some people read for joy 1/

And some to learn. The people who want to engage with it will.

I don’t think believing other people should read difficult literature is that wild of a stance tbh. Again, I’m not saying you *must*. Read what you want, but you’re not going to change my opinion that I think people should engage with it. If you don’t, you don’t, that’s free will. Our two stances can coexist.

I’m not on some crazy high horse because I want people to engage with more complex things. I would be if I’m sitting here ranting about how you MUST read The Hunger Games no matter the consequences for you

Oooh actually wait this sounds interesting. I’d love to hear more. I’m a cloud software developer (not saying I want to help, just curious about using technology for things like this)

It’s called YoMu (to read in Japanese) - the idea is for parents to be able to give kids rewards for reading - that they can convert to real-life rewards. In addition it is a family reading tracker and recommendation platform. We will be launching likely in December. I’m here and you can also follow on social (yomuapp on IG) and the site. I’m really looking for feedback and ideas and would be happy to provide early access!
