I’m genuinely curious how/why people enjoy sad books? I read to escape reality so the idea of that being something that makes me sad just has zero appeal

i love books that i know will be sad/emotionally difficult because i’ve always been deeply curious of human experiences and that’s one of them. i find that i always gain some kind of perspective on a situation i’m going through in my own life or that someone else may be going through that i know nothing about. i also find it healing to know i’m not alone in all the big feelings i go through in my own life

I’m a mood reader so if I’m sad a sad book helps me get through it. It’s odd and counterintuitive but I want to wallow in a depressing story for a bit and it makes me feel better

I mostly read to just experience something other than the world for a time, but also it’s a way for me to understand experiences I’m much more unlikely to encounter in life than others (E.g Babel, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Expanse all deal with concepts I’ll never see experience a white man and I want to understand better).

Sometimes I feel numb and I read sad stuff to feel something. That’s why I like really dark books. It makes me feel something

there’s a james baldwin quote “you think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read” and it basically sums it up a bit

And my desire to understand isn’t to fulfill some kind of performative male role (I’m gay), but because how can I effectively help other people if I don’t have a remote concept of what it’s like.
